What we collect, how we use it, who else handles it, and the choices you have.
Effective date: October 10, 2026. Last updated: October 10, 2026.
GarageSaleFans is operated by SaleFans LLC (“SaleFans”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). This policy explains what personal information we collect when you visit or use GarageSaleFans, how we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have. It applies whether or not you have an account. GarageSaleFans and EstateSaleFans are sister sites run by the same company, and the section “Our two sites” explains how they work together. Your use of GarageSaleFans is also covered by our Terms of Service.
Our privacy commitment
Your personal information is not our product.
SaleFans LLC does not sell, rent, trade, or license your personal information, including your email address, your phone number, or any other contact information, to anyone, for money or for anything else of value.
We also do not give your personal information to other companies for their own advertising or marketing, for building audiences or profiles, or for data-broker activities.
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not sell or rent customer lists, email lists, or phone-number lists.
- We do not let anyone buy access to information about our users.
- We do not give customer information to data brokers.
- We do not use your personal information for targeted advertising based on your activity on other companies’ sites and apps (cross-context behavioral advertising).
- We do not run advertising or third-party tracking pixels on GarageSaleFans.
- We do not use your location or your routes for advertising.
This commitment covers both of our sites, GarageSaleFans.com and EstateSaleFans.com. Sharing information with the service providers that run our sites, as described below, is not a sale.
Who is responsible
SaleFans LLC is responsible for the personal information described in this policy. A few features involve another organization that handles some information under its own privacy policy. The section “Service providers and other organizations” lists them.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Your account. Your email address, which you use to sign in, and any profile details you choose to add: a display name, city, state, ZIP code, and a short bio. Your password, if you set one, any phone number you add to your sign-in for two-step verification, and your sign-in codes are handled by our sign-in provider, Clerk. We never see your password.
- Your sale listings. What you put in a listing: its title and description, dates and hours, the sale address, photos, categories, items and prices, parking and accessibility notes, and your sale policies, such as the payment methods you accept.
- No phone number. GarageSaleFans does not ask for your phone number when you list a sale. If you gave us one on an earlier version of our listing form, it is private, it has never been shown on a listing, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
- Your saved activity. Sales and items you save, the Must Go, Maybe, Skip, and Visited choices you make, and routes you save, with their name, date, stops, and the start and end points you choose.
- Community sales. If you organize a community sale, the event details you enter. If you register your household for one, the contact name, email address, and address you enter. The organizer of that community sale sees them.
- Reports. If you use Report this listing, the reason and any comment you write. Reports go privately to our moderation team.
- Claims. If you ask to claim a listing that our team set up, what you tell us about your connection to it. Only our staff sees it.
- Messages to us. What you write when you email us, for example at our support address or with a privacy request. The Ask Max box in the listing flow sends your message and your email address to us, so that a person can answer you by email. We keep the message in our own system until your GarageSaleFans account is deleted. A copy may also be sent to our mailbox at AskMax@GarageSaleFans.com, where it stays like any other email you send us. Your message is not sent to an automated assistant or an AI service.
Information collected automatically
- Technical information. Like any website, our servers receive technical information with each request, such as your IP address, browser and device type, the page you asked for, and the time. Our hosting provider processes it to deliver the site and keep it secure. We also use IP addresses in counters that limit repeated requests from the same connection. We clear old counters as new ones are recorded, so how long one lasts depends on how often that feature is used.
- Marketplace measurement. Which sales and pages are viewed, saved, or added to routes, measured by our own first-party system. See “Cookies and similar technologies”.
- Recently viewed sales. When you are signed in, we remember the sales you recently viewed so you can find them again.
- Location. Only if you allow it. See “Location”.
Information from other sources
- Our sign-in provider tells us your email address, whether you verified it, and the name and profile picture on your sign-in account, if you added them.
- The U.S. Census Bureau tells us whether a sale address we asked it to check exists, and where it is.
- Other people, for example someone who reports a listing.
Location
- Searching by ZIP code or city works without your precise location.
- Your current location. We ask your browser for your device’s location only when you tap a button that uses it, and your browser asks your permission first. On Find Sales we round it to about 100 meters (330 feet) before we use it. The rounded location becomes part of that page’s web address, so it may be revealed if you share the link.
- Route planner. If you use your current location as a route’s starting point, it is used to plan that route. If you save the route, its start and end points are saved with it in your account.
- Directions. When you open directions in Google Maps, the link includes the stops and, if you set one, your starting point. The privacy policy of Google applies there.
- Place lookups. When you type a place, we first look it up in our own list of sale locations. If it is not there, we may ask the OpenStreetMap Nominatim service. We send it only a city, state, or ZIP code, never a street address.
- Sale addresses. When you list a sale, we check its address with the public geocoding service of the U.S. Census Bureau, over an encrypted connection. That request includes the street address. We do not record it in our logs.
- Maps. Map images come from OpenStreetMap. Your browser requests them directly, so OpenStreetMap receives your IP address and the map area you are viewing.
- We never use your location to infer sensitive information about you.
Photos
When you upload a photo, our server saves it again as a new image file. That removes the hidden information many cameras store inside a photo, such as the GPS location where it was taken, the date, and the camera details. It does not change what the photo shows, so before you post, check your photos for house numbers, license plates, mail, documents, and faces.
Photos are served only through our own site, which checks on every request that the photo may still be shown.
How we use information
- To run GarageSaleFans: show listings, search, maps, saved sales, and routes.
- To publish, manage, and end listings, check sale addresses, and show each address at the time the seller chose.
- To create and secure accounts and keep you signed in.
- To answer your messages and privacy requests.
- To check in with you about a sale you listed.
- To keep our sites safe: prevent fraud, spam, and abuse, limit repeated requests, review reports, and moderate listings. Some checks are automatic, such as checking that a sale address exists. Reports are reviewed by people.
- To understand and improve the marketplace with our own first-party measurement. Sellers see how many views, saves, and route adds their own listings get, not who made them.
- To follow the law, enforce our Terms, and protect the rights, property, and safety of our users, the public, and SaleFans.
You give us your honest view; in return, we put it to work. We keep what you tell us about your experience and use it to make our sites better for you and for the next seller.
We may also use information that no longer identifies anyone, such as totals, to understand and plan our business.
What other people can see
Some information is public by design, because sales happen at real places.
- Published listings. Anyone can see a published listing: its title, description, photos, dates and hours, items, the general area, the name of the seller or company, and the exact address from the reveal time the seller chose. Search engines may index it, and people may share, copy, or screenshot it. Copies made by others can remain after a listing is removed, and we cannot delete them.
- Shared routes. If you share a route, anyone with the link can see its name, your display name, its date, and its stops. You can stop sharing at any time.
- Private by default. Your email address, your saved sales and choices, your unshared routes, your location, and the reports you file are not shown to other shoppers or sellers.
Address privacy
Sellers choose when the exact street address appears: as soon as the listing is published, or later, such as on the day of the sale. Until then, shoppers see only the general area, and the map pin is placed near the home, not on it. Before reveal, delayed addresses are withheld from public page content and public API responses.
A GarageSaleFans listing comes off the site the moment the sale ends. After that, an old link shows only that the sale has ended.
How we share information
- With service providers that run our sites for us, listed below. We give them only what their service needs.
- With other people, when you publish or ask us to. For example, a published listing or a shared route. A household registration is shared with the organizer of that community sale.
- For legal, safety, and security reasons. When it is reasonably necessary to comply with the law or with valid legal process such as a subpoena, warrant, or court order; to respond to a lawful government request; to investigate fraud, account takeover, or other unlawful activity; to respond to a security incident; to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users, the public, or SaleFans; or to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims. We share only what the situation requires, and we do not hand over personal information for purposes unrelated to running, protecting, or legally administering our sites.
- In a business transfer. If SaleFans LLC is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will give any notice the law requires.
- Information that does not identify you, such as totals.
We do not share personal information in any other way.
Service providers and other organizations
These companies handle information on our behalf to run GarageSaleFans:
- Vercel hosts the site and runs its servers, so it processes the technical information that comes with each request.
- Supabase hosts our database and stores listing photos.
- Clerk runs sign-in and account security, including the sign-in and verification codes it emails you. Its sign-up protection may run a check from Cloudflare in your browser.
- Google Workspace is our business email. It receives and stores the emails you send us.
These organizations are not our service providers. They handle information under their own privacy policies:
- The U.S. Census Bureau checks sale addresses, as described under “Location”.
- OpenStreetMap provides the map images your browser loads, and answers place lookups that contain only a city, state, or ZIP code.
- Google Maps, if you choose to open directions there.
We do not use advertising networks, data brokers, or third-party analytics services.
Our two sites
GarageSaleFans.com and EstateSaleFans.com are both run by SaleFans LLC. They share one database and the service providers above, and they work together in a few ways:
- Separate sign-in. Each site has its own sign-in. If you sign in to both with the same verified email address, we link the two accounts to one record of you in our database. If that record has a seller, estate sale company, community organizer, or staff role, we do not link it automatically, and the other site does not accept a sign-in with that email address.
- Saved lists. Your Must Go, Maybe, Skip, and Visited choices and your routes stay on the site where you made them. Saved sales belong to your account record, so when your two accounts are linked, an EstateSaleFans sale you save on GarageSaleFans also shows as saved on EstateSaleFans, and EstateSaleFans sales you save there show in your GarageSaleFans saved list. Deleting or deactivating your account on one site does not affect your account on the other.
- Show estate sales. If you switch on Show estate sales, GarageSaleFans mixes public EstateSaleFans sales into your results. They link to EstateSaleFans, and you can save them and add them to a GarageSaleFans route. Their photos load from EstateSaleFans, so that site receives the request from your browser. Your choice is kept in a preference cookie. The switch is off unless you turn it on.
- No surprise publishing. Private information you give one site does not become public on the other.
- No cross-brand marketing without your choice. We do not send you marketing about our other site just because you used one of them. See “Emails from us”.
Emails from us
- Account and service emails. Sign-in and verification codes come from Clerk. We also reply when you write to us, and we may email you about a sale you listed, for example to check that everything is in order. These are not marketing.
- Your experience shapes what we improve, so we may ask for it personally. During beta, Max or another person on our team may email you to ask how your listing or sale went. In return for your time, we use your feedback to improve the experience for you and future sellers. These are feedback emails, not marketing, and we stop sending them if you ask us to.
- You decide whether we call you about feedback. We call about feedback only if you ask us to or give us permission.
- You helped shape these sites, so you should hear what your feedback changed. If you ask us to keep you posted, we keep your email address to share meaningful improvements. We keep it until you tell us to stop, even after your account is deleted.
- No marketing email. Neither site currently sends marketing email.
Independent sellers
Sellers on GarageSaleFans are independent people and organizations. They are not our employees or agents. Information you give a seller directly, for example at a sale, is outside our control.
Cookies and similar technologies
We use a small number of first-party cookies and some storage in your browser. We do not use advertising cookies.
Sign-in cookies
Clerk, our sign-in provider, sets cookies that keep you signed in and protect your account. The site needs them to work.
First-party marketplace measurement
This site uses a host-only, HttpOnly browser-session cookie containing a random opaque token. The application stores only a one-way hash of that token and expires an inactive measurement session after 30 minutes. It is not a cross-site visitor identifier and is not built from a device fingerprint, advertising ID, email address, phone number, IP address, or precise location. Requests carrying Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track are excluded from the observational browser-measurement receipt and do not receive or extend its cookie session. Separate server-authoritative operational records of actions such as saves, publication, and payment may still be retained to operate and protect the service; those facts are not attached to the measurement session when either signal is present.
Marketplace events do not store free-form search text, the place text a shopper entered, exact shopper coordinates, protected sale addresses, route geometry, full destination URLs, or full referrer URLs and query strings. Arbitrary campaign values are discarded after the server derives a closed aggregate attribution category; they are not stored. Referrers are reduced to validated hostnames. We keep these records to understand and improve the marketplace, and we have not set a fixed deletion period for them yet.
Preference cookies
We also use small first-party preference cookies that only remember choices you make on this site, such as closing a site message or showing estate sales. They hold only that choice and are not used to track you. Each lasts up to one year.
Browser storage
We also keep some functional information in your own browser’s storage, not on our servers, only so the site works: for example your unsaved route list, route-planner settings and the planner’s working state, and whether you have already seen our note about location. Some of it clears when you close the tab.
Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track
Requests that carry either signal are left out of our measurement, as described above. Because we do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising, there is nothing else for these signals to switch off. Where a law requires us to treat Global Privacy Control as an opt-out request, we honor it.
How long we keep information
- Listings. A listing comes off the site the moment the sale ends. A daily job deletes a sale within about 7 days after the sale ends: its address, photos, and items, and the saves and route stops that point to it.
- Drafts. A draft that is never published is deleted 30 days after its last change.
- Accounts. When your last sale is deleted, and you have had a sale published, we delete your GarageSaleFans account too: your sign-in, your profile, and your saved sales, routes, and other activity on GarageSaleFans. EstateSaleFans sales on your saved list are deleted too, unless you still have an active EstateSaleFans account, where they stay saved. If you have another sale coming up, we wait until that sale is deleted as well. If you leave an unpublished draft, we wait until the draft is deleted, 30 days after its last change. An account that has never had a sale published stays until you delete it.
- Accounts we keep. We do not delete an account that also has a staff, estate sale company, or community organizer role, or one that we have suspended. Its sales are still deleted on the same schedule.
- Sooner, if you want. You can delete a sale, or your whole account, yourself at any time, from your seller pages and from My Account, with these exceptions: a listing our moderators have put on hold cannot be deleted by its seller; an account with a staff, estate sale company, or community organizer role can be deactivated instead; and a suspended account cannot be deleted by its owner.
- What we keep after deletion. Records of moderation and security actions, and reports you filed about other listings. We also keep your email address if you asked us to keep you posted, until you tell us to stop. We may keep feedback you gave us for as long as reasonably needed to improve our sites and document that feedback.
- Timing. These times are operating targets for a daily job, not exact to the minute.
- If a listing is on hold for moderation, we keep the listing, its photos and the account records needed to handle it until our team resolves the hold.
- If we offer paid features, we may process and retain transaction-related records associated with those features.
- Measurement records are kept as described under “Cookies and similar technologies”.
- Emails you send us are kept in our email system for as long as we need them to help you and to keep a record of your request.
- Legal and safety holds. We may keep information longer when the law requires it, or to resolve disputes, prevent fraud and abuse, or enforce our Terms.
- Backups. Deleted information can remain for a limited time in backups kept by our service providers, until those backups are replaced.
Security
We protect personal information with safeguards that fit the information and the risks. Our sites use encrypted connections. Access to private information, such as an address that is not revealed yet, is checked on our servers for every request. Sign-in is run by a dedicated provider and supports multi-factor authentication. Staff tools are limited to staff accounts, and repeated requests are limited.
No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of information. If we learn of a breach that affects your personal information, we give the notices the law requires, to you, to regulators, and to others. If you believe your account or our site has been compromised, email Security@SaleFans.com.
Sensitive information
We do not ask for sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, financial account or payment details, government ID numbers, or health information. Please do not put it in a listing, a photo, a report, or an email to us. We use the sensitive information we do handle, such as your precise location if you share it and your sign-in details, only to provide the feature you asked for and to keep accounts secure.
Your choices
- Update your profile in My Account.
- Choose when your sale address appears.
- Delete a sale, or your account, at any time, except as described under “How long we keep information”.
- Search by ZIP code or city instead of sharing your location, and turn off location access in your browser or device settings.
- Switch Show estate sales on or off.
- Stop sharing a route at any time.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser. If you block sign-in cookies, you cannot stay signed in.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, and subject to exceptions in the law, you may have the right to:
- know whether we process your personal information, and which categories we collect, why, and who we share them with;
- access your personal information and get a copy in a portable format;
- correct inaccurate personal information;
- delete your personal information;
- withdraw consent you gave us;
- opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, targeted advertising, and certain profiling or automated decisions;
- limit certain uses of sensitive personal information;
- use an authorized agent to make a request for you;
- appeal our decision on your request; and
- use these rights without being discriminated against.
We do not sell personal information and do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so today there is no sale or advertising sharing to opt out of. We still honor opt-out requests, and Global Privacy Control where the law requires it. Wherever you live in the United States, you can ask us to access, correct, or delete your personal information, even where no state law requires us to offer that.
California
California residents have the rights above under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, to the extent it applies to us. In the last 12 months we collected the categories of personal information described in “Information we collect”: identifiers such as your name, email address, and IP address; commercial information such as your listings; internet activity such as the pages and listings you viewed; approximate and precise location; photos; and the other information you choose to give us. We collect it from the sources, and use it for the purposes, described in this policy, and we disclose it only to the service providers and in the situations described above. We do not sell or share personal information, including that of consumers under 16. We use sensitive personal information only for purposes the law allows without a right to limit, such as providing a feature you asked for and keeping accounts secure. We do not disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing.
Ohio
We started in Northeast Ohio. Ohio residents can use every right described in this policy by emailing Privacy@SaleFans.com. We protect personal information with reasonable security safeguards and give data-breach notices as Ohio law requires.
District of Columbia
For residents of the District of Columbia, we keep reasonable security safeguards for personal information, choose service providers that protect it, and give data-breach notices as District of Columbia law requires.
Other states
Residents of other states with privacy laws may have additional rights. We handle requests under each state’s requirements, including verification, response times, and appeals. If your state gives you a right this policy does not list, or more protection than this policy gives, we honor it as that law requires.
How to use your rights
- Email Privacy@SaleFans.com. Say which site you used, GarageSaleFans or EstateSaleFans, and what you are asking for. Writing from the email address on your account helps us find it. You can also delete your GarageSaleFans account yourself in My Account, except as described under “How long we keep information”.
- We verify requests before acting on them, usually by confirming that you control the email address on the account. We ask only for what we need to verify you, and we use it only for that.
- An authorized agent can make a request for you where the law allows. We may ask for proof that you gave the agent permission, and ask you to verify your identity with us.
- If we decline your request, you can appeal by emailing Privacy@SaleFans.com with the subject “Privacy Appeal”. We will tell you the result and, where the law provides it, how to contact your state attorney general.
- We respond within the time the law requires, and we will not treat you differently for using your rights.
- Please do not send passwords or sign-in codes in a request.
Children
Our sites are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Children under 13 may not create an account or submit personal information to us, and under our Terms of Service you must be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live if that is higher, to create an account, list a sale, manage a company profile, or send an inquiry. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it. A parent or guardian who believes a child has given us personal information can email Privacy@SaleFans.com.
Links to other sites
Our sites link to other sites and apps, such as seller and company websites, Google Maps for directions, and social apps when you use a share button. Their privacy practices are their own, so please read their policies.
Where we process information
We are a U.S. company. Our database is hosted in the United States, and our service providers may process information in the United States and in other places where they operate.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we update the “Last updated” date at the top. If a change is significant, we will give notice on our sites before it takes effect, and ask for your consent where the law requires. We will not start selling personal information or using it for targeted advertising without first changing this policy and getting any consent the law requires.
